A collaborative venture between Egypt's Green Planet and Emirati low-carbon solution provider Zero Carbon Ventures aims to turn organic waste into fertilizer, hydrogen, graphene, and other valuable items. The project will be executed at Egypt's capital city of Cairo, at the landfill site designated for May 15, 2024.
On February 7, 2024, the Zero Carbon Green Planet (ZCGP) joint venture was founded. In order to recover organic waste in Cairo, specifically at the location of the May 15 landfill, Zero Carbon Ventures, based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Green Planet for Sustainable Environmental Solutions, an Egyptian provider of waste management solutions, will team up to implement a cutting-edge system that is "Zero Carbon patent-pending."
Martin Reynolds, CEO and co-founder of Zero Carbon Ventures, a company that offers low-carbon solutions, says, "The new advanced manufacturing plant we plan to build in Egypt will extract every drop of value from waste that would otherwise go to landfill, to make new products that will be reused in the marketplace."
In addition to keeping thousands of tonnes of methane and CO2 from escaping into the atmosphere, the future facility will convert 400 tonnes of organic waste every day into graphene, hydrogen, fertilizer, and other valuable goods.
According to Tarek El-Araby, CEO of Egypt's Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA), "the realization of this project will not only advance our circular economy, but also strengthen the position of the Land of the Pharaohs as a regional hub for economic growth and manufacturing." Regarding substance, the nation in North Africa hopes to contribute to increasing the percentage of solid waste recycled to more than 50%.
By 2025, the project's initial phase on the landfill site will be operational. By 2027, the Cairo waste-to-energy project will be finished in its entirety. Up to 250 workers would be employed by the plant, lowering Egypt's poverty rate, which the World Bank estimated to be 29.7% in 2019.
Together with creating this state-of-the-art solid waste management facility, the ZCGP joint venture is dedicated to hearing the aspirations and strategies of the Egyptian government and assisting it in its efforts to achieve initiatives that will contribute to a cleaner, greener future.
